Chumphon is located on the Isthmus of Kra, the narrow landbridge connecting the Malay Peninsula with the mainland of Thailand. To the west are the hills of the Phuket mountain range and its northern continuation, the Tenasserim chain, while the east is the more flat land at the coat to the Gulf of Thailand. The main river is the Lang Suan, which originates in Phato district.

Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary covers some 1,560 sq. km of Chaiyaphum province and is adjacent to the Nam Nao National Park of Mekong & the Hills, to make a total protected area of some 2,500 sq. km. The area is the watershed for both the Pasak river, which flows south west to the Chao Praya, and the Chi river, which flows through Khon Kaen & Mid-Isan until it joins the Mun just before Ubon Ratchathani. Chulabhorn Dam has drowned the lowland between the two parks, providing beautiful scenery but also giving easier access to loggers.
